How Advances in Excavator Technology Have Turned Mini Excavators into Powerful, Multi-Purpose Machines Across Industries

Mini Excavators

Technological and mechanical developments within the sphere of the construction industry have been rapid over the past two decades to say the least and this is especially true when it comes to the, excavator.

Excavators are generally seen as the workhorses of the construction industry due to the versatility and practicality of these machines, which are unmatched by any other heavy machine. The design of the excavators was at its genesis to dig, scoop and dump, however, over the past few decades, the scope of the excavator’s ability has grown significantly.

The progress that have been made within the realm of mechanical hydraulics, coupled with numerous technologies have transformed excavators into multipurpose machines. Excavators do not only dig, scoop and dump anymore, and if one was to look at the capabilities of the newest excavator models which include small and mini excavators for hire, they will come to find that these machines are capable of much more.

An excavator is able to grade, compact, drill, demolish, rip and even cut steel provided it is fitted with the right hydraulic attachment via the hydraulic coupling links which is a feature most excavators are capable of.

Depending on a project, excavators are used across a range of other industries apart from the construction industry. From the forestry industry, the farming industry, warehousing, agriculture and even the home improvement segment which is the driver behind mini excavators being taken for hire, excavators are the ‘go to’ machine for most projects.

Mini or compact excavators may be small but they are packed to the brim with sufficient power and features that rival their standard sized counterparts. However, it must be noted that most contractors seek out mini excavators for specific reasons and among them includes congested or space constraints that render standard sized excavators useless or impractical.

Other reasons as to why the compact versions are preferred includes environment sensitivity, for instance, landscaped surfaces would suffer greatly if larger or standard sized excavators were to pass over them, and with mini excavators, this issue is almost non-existent due to their lightweight.

Similarly, mini excavators are also preferred for projects that are in environments that are cluttered with other structures such as walls or fixtures and mini excavators are excellent solutions in such scenarios. Other plus points about these small yet versatile and powerful machines include the fact that they are easy to transport and most compact excavators fit unto the back of a pickup truck without much issues.

Nevertheless, mini excavators are costly and as such for medium sized construction firms or DIY enthusiast, buying such a machine would not be financially viable. This is because apart from being expensive, these excavators also carry with them ownership costs in the form of maintenance, transporting and storage among others.

Renting small excavators is not only much more economical, but it is also convenient as most construction equipment companies offer drop-off and pick-up services in a timely manner.
